To Jason Haley, it feels as though everyone but him has a role to play. Then he finds a powerful talisman - a huge opal called the Dragonheart - buried in a cave. When its power washes over him, he knows he's destined for a greater purpose than anyone ever imagined. Madison Moss can hears the seductive call of the Dragonheart also, but she has other things on her mind. Maddie's been leaking dark magic ever since absorbing the blow that was meant to kill her boyfriend, Seph. If anyone finds out, she'll be banished from the sanctuary - and Seph - forever. Meanwhile, Trinity's enemies mean to win the war with the help of the Dragonheart, and they know that Madison Moss is the only one who can get it for them. Moral compasses spin out of control as a final battle storms through a town that was meant to be a refuge. With so much to lose, what will Jason and Maddie be willing to fight for - and what will they sacrifice? It's everyone for himself in this thrilling conclusion to the Heir trilogy.

My Thoughts

Betrayals. Double-crossings. Blackmail. This book gives you plenty. Struggling to feel wanted, Jason Haley goes against Hastings orders and infiltrates D'Orsay's new claimed home. Unaware of the treasure that is buried deep within a cave, D'Orsay is amused by the failed attack. Until he discovers what Jason escaped with. Meanwhile, Maddison Moss is struggling with her own issues. She desperately wants to get close with Seph, but after intercepting Leicester's spell originally meant for Seph at Second Sister, Maddison hasn't quite been the same. Literally drawing out his energy, Maddison knows she can't stay. She leaps at the first chances that she gets, returning home to protect her family and property. Alicia Middleton slithers back into Trinity, with a hidden agenda of her own. Growing closer with Jason, Leesha can't stand the thought of betraying him, but she must if she wants to escape Warren Barber. Soon they all find themselves mixed up in a war that has been going on for centuries. As more and more twists hinder their chances of winning, they must come together through sorrow, hardship, and courage. Old enemies return seeking revenge and power. As an all-out war is thrust upon Trinity, it is up to the small team of heirs to end it.
There is so much backstabbing, betrayal going on that you find yourself being swept away. You're never really sure who to believe. I love how complex the stories are and how they intermingle with each other. Each time I read them, I go back and catch why a certain character spoke that way or why they acted as they did. Speaking of the characters, they are all well developed, bringing their own unique personalities to push the story further along. The wording was straight and to the point during the more action packed scenes and more calm and descriptive in the more tense scenes. There is something for everyone in this series. There is romance, humor, action, and emotion. An excellent read for anyone looking for an adventure into the world of magic.
