Hope Betrayed, the second book in The Silent Tempest trilogy, follows Caleb’s desperate mission to save his only child, Warren. With winter fast approaching and Ada’s centuries-old enemy closing in, Caleb has no choice but to return and face the consequences of his betrayal of Ada’s sacred oath. Yet his son is no longer the boy he once knew. Warren’s resentment over his mother’s death on Earth burns deeper each day, until an act of desperate longing begins the tragic fulfillment of ancient prophecy. Telai seeks Caleb in the wilderness, answering her heart’s call in defiance of her position as Grand Loremaster. Yet a visit from a mysterious stranger triggers a dark vision, and a warning: this child from the stars may be more than he seems. No one knows the ancient stories more than Telai. And no one knows better what they teach us. Evil never dies ... it only sleeps.

My Thoughts

I don’t even know where to begin. Throughout the story, the plot twists always kept me second guessing what I truly believed to be true and false. The characters each grow tremendously throughout this book more than the first. The delicate situations that they are thrown into really gives you a chance to see how their thoughts and views differ from each other. I really enjoyed the multiple POV's while reading this. Each character is struggling in some way, shape, or form. It was really nice to see inside them and know what they were willing and not willing to do. I think Godwin did a fantastic job of portraying Caleb and Warren's fragile relationship. You could see how much they cared about each other. But their pride, selfishness, and anger guided their actions, only straining their relationship even more. Godwin's writing also easily casts you into another world, never shirking on the details. No matter how much he threw at the group, they always somehow managed to piece themselves together and carry on. More secrets, betrayals, and mysteries bring action and adventure to this book. I could not put this book down! I cannot wait to see what the group gets up to in the next book!
