Stacking the Shelves|January 2016 Book Haul

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you all are well and having a wonderful time! There are only a few days left in December, meaning there's still plenty of time to shop for books before the new year. However, I believe my book shopping sprees and opening gifts has concluded for this year. Thus begins my December book haul!
Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews where you can share your recent book purchases, giveaway wins, and books received from publishers.

Throughout the month, I accumulated quite a lot of books. I guess I have a lot of reading to do or can't control my bookish needs.

I finally got The Darkest Minds Series in hardback!

Red Queen By Victoria Aveyard|Review

Red Queen (Red Queen #1)
Published by HarperTeen on February 10th, 2015
Genre:Young Adult Fantasy
Pages: 383
Format: Hardcover

This is a world divided by blood – red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart ...

My Thoughts

I don't even know where to start. In the beginning, I could foresee many of the outcomes of Mare's actions. However, when more and more mysterious, charming, and brave characters were introduced, creating their own ideas and actions, I found the consequences were harder to spot. The writing of the story is fantastic, there was never a time when I got confused with what was happening. The characters were well rounded and developed. I knew from the beginning not to trust a certain person, who shall remain nameless. They just seemed like they had something up their sleeves. I really enjoyed the concept of the two blood types. I honestly questioned how Mare would prevail over the Silvers if she didn't possess any powers. The action and emotion were fantastically portrayed in Red Queen. I definitely recommend reading this if you are into abilities, a corrupted government, and a sprinkle of romance.

Re-Read Challenge

A huge thanks to Kelly over at Belle of the Literati for hosting this challenge!

When I First Read: Shortly after the book was released.

What I Remember: Silver blood is superior over red. Mare's blood is red but she has inherited powers of a silver's blood. She is taken to live with the king for her own safety or for the safety of the kingdom. Lots of twists, gut-wrenching, backstabbing, and a steampunk/victorian fight for survival.

Why I Wanted to Re-Read: To refresh my memory before Glass Sword.

How I Felt After Re-Reading: Excited.

Would I Re-Read Again?: Probably.

Burning Glass|Waiting on Wednesday

A HUGE thanks to Jill at Breaking the Spine for hosting an incredible meme. It is fantastic that everyone can communicate and enjoy these posts by creating their own and sharing others.

Burning Glass hits the shelves March 1st, 2016.

"Sonya was born with the rare gift to feel what those around her feel—both physically and emotionally—a gift she’s kept hidden from the empire for seventeen long years. After a reckless mistake wipes out all the other girls with similar abilities, Sonya is hauled off to the palace and forced to serve the emperor as his sovereign Auraseer.

Tasked with sensing the intentions of would-be assassins, Sonya is under constant pressure to protect the emperor. One mistake, one small failure, will cost her own life and the lives of the few people left in the world who still trust her.

But Sonya’s power is untamed and reckless, her feelings easily usurped, and she sometimes can’t decipher when other people’s impulses end and her own begin. In a palace full of warring emotions and looming darkness, Sonya fears that the biggest danger to the empire may be herself.

As she struggles to wrangle her abilities, Sonya seeks refuge in her tenuous alliances with the volatile Emperor Valko and his idealistic younger brother, Anton, the crown prince. But when threats of revolution pit the two brothers against each other, Sonya must choose which brother to trust—and which to betray.

BURNING GLASS is debut author Kathryn Purdie’s stunning tale of dangerous magic, heart-rending romance, and the hard-won courage it takes to let go. "
