There are ghosts around every corner in Fayette, Pennsylvania. Tessa left when she was nine and has been trying ever since not to think about it after what happened that last summer. Memories of things so dark will burn themselves into your mind if you let them. Callie never left. She moved to another house, so she doesn’t have to walk those same halls, but then Callie always was the stronger one. She can handle staring into the face of her demons–and if she parties hard enough, maybe one day they’ll disappear for good. Tessa and Callie haven’t talked about what they saw that summer night since it happened. After the trial Callie drifted and Tessa moved and childhood friends just have a way of losing touch. But ever since she left, Tessa’s had questions. Things have never quite added up. And now she has to go back to Fayette–to Wyatt Stokes sitting on death row; to Lori Cawley, Callie’s dead cousin; and to the only other person who may be hiding the truth. Only the closer Tessa gets to the truth, the closer she gets to a killer–and this time, it won’t be as easy to run away.

My Thoughts

A series of murders rocked the solid earth underneath the citizens of Fayette, Pennsylvania. Just nine at the time, Tessa, along with her friend, Callie, were the last to see Lori alive. Coincidentally, Tessa’s sister, Joslin, mysteriously vanishes without a trace, leading Tessa question everything leading up to Lori’s disappearance. Desperate for the conviction of Wyatt Stokes, Tessa and Callie dismissed what they knew and sentence a man to death. Ten years later, nineteen-year-old, Tessa never imagined herself returning to her childhood town. Strictly there to visit her dying jailed father once last time, Tessa only hoped to return to Georgia a few days later. As new evidence is slowly brought to light, Tessa begins to question the entire case. Was Wyatt Stokes truly a serial killer? Horrifying secrets obstruct Tessa from getting to the bottom of the murders. On a complicated track, Tessa is determined to find the true killer while simultaneously searching for her mother and sister. This book will always keep you guessing and your mind wondering! Just when you think you've got it figured out, think again! I don't even know how many times I altered my final guess until I was proved completely wrong! I love the Executive Editor’s note before the book begins. It was very clever, I must say. But I didn’t believe it for a second! I really enjoyed Kara Thomas’ writing style. Normally I’m no a big fan of the first person point of view, but she executed it flawlessly. Her dedication to detail really increased the depth of the story. A thing to remember while reading this is that every character is important! No matter how insignificant they are, it wouldn't be a fantastic story without their explosive secrets. Each character is well developed, leading the plot in numerous directions until you finally their secrets are uncovered.
At first I was a little overwhelmed with potential important character names being mentioned left and right. But after reading the first few chapters, I managed to pinpoint who was who. I could not put this book down! Every free moment I had, I spend them buried deep inside this book.
