For fans of Holly Black and Nova Ren Suma, a gripping, hauntingly atmospheric novel about murder, revenge, and a world where monsters—human and otherwise—lurk at the fringes. When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past. In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous. Tense, complex, and wholly engaging, Shallow Graves is a stunning first novel from Kali Wallace.

My Thoughts

Breezy Lin, an aspiring astronaut is reported missing after attending a classmate's party. A year later, Breezy wakes up, under a pile of dirt and in the backyard of a stranger. Neither dead or alive, Breezy is equipped with a strange gift. A sixth sense to see human’s inner demons and true intentions. On a mission to find who and what she is, Breezy stumbles upon all sort of storybook creatures. Through the horrors that await, Breezy builds up the courage and bravery to face her demons. Where do you even begin with this book! There was action, horror, and humor! Kali Wallace’s writing is truly one of a kind. Elegant, yet brutally descriptive. Cleaver, yet mildly vague. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment while reading this book. You cannot simply sit down and few a chapters, you must read as much as you possibly can. Full of hearing tracing suspense and bone-chilling secrets, this book will keep you up at night, admiring the stars. I really enjoyed the secrecy behind Breezy’s murderer, allowing the readers to think creatively until it is revealed in the end. I can’t wait to see what Kali writes next!
